Learning from Grandmother’s Hands

“I learned to crochet at the age of 5 from my grandmother and picked it up again in my mid-twenties when I moved to the countryside and became a stay-at-home mom. (I’m 48 now).” Marianne’s journey into the world of crochet had humble beginnings, rooted in the guidance of her grandmother. It’s a tale of intergenerational skill-sharing, where the art of crochet was passed down and rediscovered in a later chapter of her life.

From Doilies to Wearables

“It all actually started out with making doilies by patterns, and then slowly I moved on to making various wearables and accessories, eventually creating patterns for Estonian craft magazine and my own Etsy shop.” From the delicate intricacies of doilies, the artist’s skill evolved into crafting wearables and accessories. Her creations found a platform in Estonian craft magazines and her Etsy shop, marking the beginning of a journey that would weave her passion into the broader artistic tapestry.

Crochet and Family Life

“At that period I also tried my hand at other crafts like felting, knitting, sewing, making polymer clay jewelry, etc. But I soon realized that crochet was most convenient with small kids around – it’s really easy to pick up and put down as needed, there’s no need for extra space or special studio set up. I was really able to smoothly weave this practice into my everyday life.” Marianne’s artistic pursuits extended beyond crochet, exploring various crafts. Yet, it was the versatility and adaptability of crochet that became her creative anchor. With the demands of family life, crochet emerged as the perfect artistic companion—flexible, accommodating, and seamlessly integrated into her daily routine.

The Ebb and Flow of Creativity

“Around 10 years ago, my crochet practice started to slow down, and there were years where I rarely picked up the hook as I was busy in other areas of life. When a lockdown came, everything shut down, and I started to crochet again. Haven’t stopped since!” Life’s ebbs and flows impacted Marianne’s creative journey. A decade ago, crochet took a backseat as life unfolded. However, the unexpected halt brought about by a lockdown reignited the spark. With the world in pause, Marianne found solace and renewed inspiration in the rhythmic motion of crochet.

Intuition and Nature

“My creative process is very intuitive. I never sketch anything out or plan much ahead. I do have a vague idea what I’m about to make, but often I fall into flow state and just let things happen. As I live in midst of nature – literally in the forest by the beach, nature is a huge source of inspiration for me. Whether it be mushrooms, plants, flowers, fish, or shells.” Marianne’s creative process is a dance of intuition and spontaneity. Nature, with its myriad forms, serves as her muse. Living amidst the serene beauty of the forest by the beach, Marianne’s crochet art is a reflection of the organic inspiration that surrounds her—whether it’s the delicate bloom of a flower, the whimsy of mushrooms, or the intricate patterns found in seashells. In each stitch, the artist weaves not just yarn but a narrative—an ode to family, resilience, and the enchantment found in the simplicity of nature. Her crochet art, showcased in 20 captivating images, invites us to explore a world where creativity flows effortlessly, and the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary.
